Warri Catholic priest suspended over secret marriage in U.S.

The Catholic Diocese of Warri, Delta State, has suspended Rev. Fr. Daniel Okanatotor Oghenerukevwe from priestly duties following his alleged marriage in the United States.

In a statement titled “Decree of Suspension” dated Thursday, January 16, 2025, and released to journalists on Sunday, the diocese confirmed that Fr. Oghenerukevwe entered into matrimony with Ms. Dora Chichah on December 29, 2024, at the Streams of Joy Church in Dallas, USA.

The suspension, signed by Rt. Rev. Anthony Ovayero Ewherido, Bishop of Warri, and Very Rev. Fr. Clement Abobo, Chancellor/Notary, cited Canon 1394 S1, which imposes a latae sententiae suspension on clerics who attempt marriage.

The statement partly read:
“By this action, Rev. Fr. Daniel Okanatotor Oghenerukevwe has incurred a latae sententiae suspension, and I, Most Rev. Anthony Ovayero Ewherido, hereby officially decree that he is suspended from the exercise of sacred ministry.”

The Diocese revealed that the priest had requested to be released from his canonical obligations on November 30, 2024.

However, despite being asked to provide the necessary documents to formalize the process, Fr. Oghenerukevwe proceeded with the marriage without completing the procedure.

As a result, he is prohibited from presenting himself as a priest of the Diocese of Warri, and all canonical implications of the suspension are in immediate effect (cf. Can. 1333).

The Diocese also stated that Fr. Oghenerukevwe retains the right to appeal the suspension and seek revocation or amendment of the decree if he demonstrates a willingness to reform.

The statement concluded:
“May God grant him the grace to reflect on this situation and guide him on the path of reconciliation.”

Footage of the marriage, which reportedly circulated widely on social media, is believed to have prompted the diocese’s swift response.
