Video: President Tinubu and first lady depart Brazil following G20 summit
President Bola Ahmed Tinubu and First Lady Oluremi Tinubu have concluded their visit to Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, following their participation in the 2024 G-20 Leaders’ Summit.
According to reports, the president and his delegation departed GaleĂŁo Air Force Base, Rio, at 10:30 a.m. local time on Saturday.
During his time in Brazil, President Tinubu underscored Nigeria’s readiness to represent Africa in the United Nations Security Council, calling for a more inclusive council with two permanent seats for Africa. He affirmed Nigeria’s willingness to take on this role.
At the summit, Tinubu praised global efforts to combat hunger and poverty, highlighting the Alliance Against Hunger and Poverty as a significant step toward eradicating these challenges worldwide. On the sidelines, he held bilateral discussions with Kristalina Georgieva, Managing Director of the International Monetary Fund (IMF), who applauded the economic reforms introduced by his administration and their positive impact.
Additionally, President Tinubu oversaw the signing of a $2.5 billion Letter of Intent between Nigeria and JBS S.A., a leading Brazilian company and one of the world’s largest meat processors.
The summit, hosted by Brazilian President Lula da Silva, revolved around the theme, “Building a Just World and a Sustainable Planet.” Discussions focused on sustainable development, global governance reforms, climate change, and the digital economy, alongside pressing geopolitical issues like the Israel–Hamas conflict and U.S.–China relations.
The G20 comprises 19 member nations and the European Union, with Nigeria participating as part of the African Union’s invitation. This aligns with President Da Silva’s emphasis on tackling food security and eradicating extreme poverty by 2030.
