UCL: Tyrone Mings’ costly error ends Aston Villa’s perfect run against Club Brugge
Aston Villa’s unbeaten Champions League campaign came to an end after a misjudgment by Tyrone Mings that led to a 1-0 loss against Club Brugge.
Mings’ lapse in concentration resulted in a decisive penalty, ruining Villa’s flawless start in the Europe’s top competition.
The incident occurred when Mings, misinterpreting a pass from goalkeeper Emi Martinez as a dead-ball situation, picked up the ball in his own penalty area, assuming he was to take a goal kick.
However, Martinez had legally restarted play and Mings’ handling of the ball prompted a VAR review, ultimately leading the referee to award a penalty to Brugge.
Hans Vanaken calmly converted, sealing the only goal of the match.
Despite Villa’s efforts, including the introduction of substitute Jhon Duran for a late push, they were unable to break Brugge’s defense.
