UCL: “Only Bayern has something to lose” – Xabi Alonso insists ahead of second leg

Bayer Leverkusen head coach Xabi Alonso insists his side are fully “convinced” they can overturn a 3-0 first-leg deficit against Bayern Munich in the UEFA Champions League Round of 16 on Tuesday night.

Goals from Harry Kane (2) and Jamal Musiala have put Vincent Kompany’s Bayern in firm control of the tie, but Alonso remains confident heading into the second leg at the BayArena.

Speaking at Monday’s press conference, Alonso emphasized his team’s underdog mentality:

“We have to prepare well. The team is convinced that we can win the game.”

“We have nothing to lose. Only Bayern has something to lose. In football, anything can happen.

“Many small details will decide the outcome. If we make mistakes, we have no chance.”

Leverkusen captain Jonathan Tah echoed Alonso’s belief, urging his teammates to approach the game with courage rather than fear.

“We must not approach the game with fear. We can only win. With our team, we have a chance and that is how we will approach the game.”
