Tokyo Olympics: Team Nigeria lose again in women’s wrestling
Nineteen-year-old Nigerian, Adijat Idris, was defeated by Ukraine’s Oksana Livach in the quarter-final of the wrestling women’s 50kg freestyle at the ongoing Tokyo 2020 Olympics.
The Ukrainian defeated Idris 10-0 by technical superiority on Friday.
If Livach reaches the final, Idris may have a chance to fight for Bronze through the repechages.
Idris had no answer to everything Livach threw at her as the Nigerian lost 10-0 to bow out of the games.
The outcome of Idris’ result means Team Nigeria can no longer contest for a medal.
Adijat Idris is a young freestyle wrestler from Nigeria who qualified the country for the Tokyo Olympics at 50 kg.
She did so with a runner-up finish at the 2021 African & Oceania Wrestling Olympic Qualification Tournament.
Meanwhile, Nigeria medal hope in wrestling, Odunayo Adekuoroye also lost her 57kg weight category fight in the ongoing Tokyo 2020 Olympics.
Adekuoroye was defeated by fall by Anastasia Nichita of Moldova in a swift turn of events.
She was leading 8-2 before Nichita won through a pin in the round of 16.
After competing in 10 sports, Team Nigeria secured one silver and one bronze won by Blessing Oborodudu and Ese Brume respectively.
Oborodudu picked up the silver in women’s freestyle wrestling while Brume got the bronze in long jump.
And on the medal table, Team Nigeria currently occupy 71st position.
