Amusan who had a stellar 2022 where she delivered brilliant performances at the Diamond League, Commonwealth Games, and World Athletics Championships, became the first Nigerian world champion after she clocked a wind-aided 12.06 seconds, ineligible as a world record because of +2.5 meters per second strong wind.
She also won the gold medal at the 2022 Commonwealth Games before retaining her Diamond League title to put a brilliant wrap on her season.
Also in the world of athletics, another Nigerian athlete, Emmanuel Bamidele won the silver medal at the Stockholm Diamond League’s 400m race. He finished in 45.48 seconds behind South Africa’s Zakhiti Nene, who won the gold in 45.30 seconds.
World Championships silver medallist, Ese Brume, had a poor run at the league as she finished fifth in the women’s long jump.
Amusan, Brume, Emmanuel, and other Nigerian athletes competing in the Diamond League are expected in Benin today, July 3, to compete in the Athletics Federation of Nigeria’s (AFN) national trials, which is the qualifier for this year’s World Athletics Championships billed to hold in Budapest, Hungary.
