Thieves target MAPOLY students, demand $100 in cryptocurrency for stolen devices
A thief or a gang of thieves has drawn attention from students and residents of MAPOLY in Abeokuta after repeatedly breaking into homes to steal phones and laptops, demanding $100 or more in exchange for the stolen items.
This was revealed by a social media user who shared an update on their page, stating that the thieves have been operating around the MAPOLY area in Abeokuta for some time.
According to the post, the thieves primarily break into rooms to steal phones, laptops, and other gadgets, later contacting the victims to demand money in exchange for the return of their stolen devices.
The user further explained that the thieves typically leave behind their Telegram contact details, instructing the victims to reach out and pay via cryptocurrency before being told when and where to retrieve their gadgets.
The post read: “There’s a thief or a gang of thieves currently operating around the student areas of MAPOLY in Abeokuta. They get a tip, break into students’ rooms, steal their phones or laptops, and leave a note with a Telegram handle for them to message if they want to recover their device(s).”
“When contacted, they demand $100 (more or less), depending on the market value of the device, and ask for payment in crypto via a ‘generated’ payment link. After payment is made, they send photos of the house and the exact area where the devices can be retrieved, along with the specific time for pickup.”
Authorities have now dedicated resources to apprehend the perpetrators.
Following this revelation, another user reported that one of the thieves had been captured, sharing a video showing the suspect’s face.
