Ten Hag confirms Man United preferred him over Tuchel, despite initial talks

Erik ten Hag has confirmed that Manchester United considered replacing him with Thomas Tuchel but decided to retain him as their manager.

Speaking to NOS Studio Voetbal, ten Hag shared some insights into the club’s decision-making process.

“Manchester United told me they spoke with Thomas Tuchel,” ten Hag revealed. “They eventually concluded they already have the best manager.”

The Dutchman humorously recounted how United executives flew to Ibiza to inform him personally.

“They disturbed my holiday, suddenly standing at my doorstep,” he said with a smile.

The Dutch manager also confirmed ongoing discussions about a new contract with the club.

“We still have to find an agreement for the new contract. This isn’t easily done; we still have to talk,” he stated.

Regarding the involvement of INEOS, Manchester United’s new investors, ten Hag remarked, “INEOS are new to football, so it’s normal for them to take their time and reflect on the season.”

Acknowledging the club’s consultations with other candidates, he noted, “It’s no secret they talked with multiple candidates for the Man United job. In England, it’s allowed.”

While the negotiations for his new deal continue, ten Hag’s position at Manchester United appears secure, with both parties expressing a commitment to work together.
