Super Eagles yet to approach Arsenal’s Nwaneri over Nigeria switch despite rumours
The Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) nor its representatives have made contacts with Ethan Nwaneri for a switch to the Super Eagles, despite rumours.
According to All Nigeria Soccer, the new Super Eagles manager Eric Chelle had asked Alex Iwobi, a fellow Hale End Academy graduate, to use his Arsenal ties to convince Nwaneri to play for the Super Eagles.
However, it is confirmed that neither Iwobi nor the NFF has contacted Nwaneri’s parents about the possibility.
Born in London, the 17-year-old is eligible to play for Nigeria through his father, Obi Nwaneri, who oversees extra training sessions for Ethan and his younger brother.
Despite this, there has been no engagement from the Nigerian camp.
Nwaneri has represented England at U16, U17, and U19 levels, captaining the Young Lions multiple times in 2024.
His appearance in a European U17 Championship qualifier in 2022 provisionally cap-tied him to England, meaning he would require a one-time switch from FIFA to play for Nigeria.
The NFF continues its search for a creative playmaker after missing out on Eberechi Eze (England) and Michael Olise (France), both of whom declined Super Eagles invitations.
