“Strange” – Bayer Leverkusen coach Alonso describes Boniface’s failed Al-Nassr move
Bayer Leverkusen manager Xabi Alonso has described Victor Boniface’s collapsed move to Al-Nassr as “a bit strange.”
Alonso also lauded the Nigerian striker’s response after making a goalscoring return from injury.
Boniface, who joined Leverkusen from Union Saint-Gilloise in the summer of 2023, has been in sensational form, scoring 30 goals and providing 11 assists in 50 appearances across all competitions.
His performances attracted interest from Saudi Pro League side Al-Nassr, with reports suggesting that a deal had been agreed between the clubs.
However, the transfer fell through, with Al-Nassr instead signing Jhon Duran from Aston Villa.
Despite the setback, Boniface returned from a two-month injury layoff in style, netting the opener in Leverkusen’s 3-1 win over Hoffenheim.
After the game, Alonso acknowledged the awkwardness of Boniface’s transfer situation but praised his mentality.
“It was an important moment for him after his injury,” Alonso told Bild. “The situation last week was a bit strange, uncomfortable.
“It was important that Boni felt important again. He should feel the love of the fans—that’s good for his head,” he added.
