Serie A: Patrick Vieira appointed Genoa head coach
Genoa have officially named Arsenal legend Patrick Vieira as their new head coach, marking his return to Serie A, this time in a managerial capacity.
The announcement comes following the sudden dismissal of Alberto Gilardino, just days before Genoa’s crucial clash with relegation rivals Cagliari.
Vieira signed his contract at the club’s Villa Rostan headquarters and is set to lead his first training session on Wednesday afternoon.
Vieira, a former French international, brings a wealth of experience both as a player and a coach.
His playing career included stints at Serie A clubs AC Milan, Juventus and Inter Milan, where he made 100 appearances and scored 11 goals.
In management, Vieira began with Manchester City’s Elite Development Squad before taking the reins at New York City FC.
He later managed Crystal Palace in the Premier League and held positions at Nice and Strasbourg in Ligue 1.
Genoa, currently struggling in Serie A, will hope Vieira’s leadership and familiarity with Italian football can inspire a turnaround.
Vieira’s first test comes this weekend against Cagliari in a vital Serie A encounter.
