Serie A: Napoli begin campaign with humiliating 3-0 defeat against Verona on Conte’s debut
Antonio Conte marked his Napoli debut with a sad 3-0 defeat at the hands of Hellas Verona on Sunday evening.
Coming into the match, Napoli were without their key players Victor Osimhen, Michael Folorunsho, and Mario Rui, all sidelined due to pending transfer issues.
Andre Frank Zambo Anguissa came close to scoring for the Naples side, heading over from a Giovanni Di Lorenzo cross.
Stanislav Lobotka also narrowly missed with a shot from the edge of the box.
Napoli’s best chance came just before halftime, but Khvicha Kvaratskhelia who was through on goal after a poor back-pass, couldn’t capitalize on his chance.
Verona broke the deadlock in the second half with a quick counter-attack, as Darko Lazovic set up Rocha Livramento to score his debut goal.
They doubled their lead through substitute Daniel Mosquera, who coolly slotted past Alex Meret.
The nightmare continued for Napoli as Verona sealed the 3-0 win in stoppage time.
Mosquera scored his second after a dramatic scene in the box, leaving Conte’s side on the wrong foot in their season’s opener.
