Senegal becomes first African country to win at 2022 World Cup after defeating Qatar

Qatar suffered its second straight defeat in the 2022 World Cup it is hosting after Friday’s match against African champions, Senegal.

Goals from Boulaye Dia and Famara Diedhiou gave Senegal the lead before Qatar substitute Mohammed Muntari replied in the 78th minute to set up a dramatic finale.

Senegal’s substitute Bamba Dieng scored six minutes later to put the result beyond doubt and lift the African champions, who opened with a 2-0 loss to the Netherlands, right back into contention in Group A.

Following the 3-1 defeat, Qatar’s elimination from the World Cup might come today, November 25, less than a week into the tournament it’s been preparing to play in for 12 years if Netherlands and Ecuador draw in the day’s other Group A game, or if the Dutch win.

Qatar is already in the history book as the first host to lose the opening game of the tournament. Though South Africa is the only other host team to be eliminated in the group stage, the African country at least went out with a win and a draw from their three games.
