Senator Natasha accuses Akpabio of making advances towards her
The crisis in the Senate surrounding the reallocation of a seat to Senator Natasha Akpoti-Uduaghan (Kogi Central) took a turn on Friday morning, as the lawmaker accused Senate President Godswill Akpabio of making persistent sexual advances toward her.
Speaking on Arise Television’s Morning Show in Abuja, Akpoti-Uduaghan alleged that Akpabio’s antagonism toward her stemmed from her refusal to yield to his advances, both within and outside the country.
Detailing an alleged incident from December 18, 2023, the senator claimed that Akpabio attempted to proposition her at his residence in Akwa Ibom, in the presence of her husband.
According to her, Akpabio invited her to tour his house while holding her hand, with her husband trailing behind. She recounted that the Senate President commented on the house’s beauty before allegedly stating:
“Now that you’re a senator, I’m going to create time for us to come spend quality moments here. You will enjoy it.”
She further explained that she pulled away, unsure if her husband had overheard the conversation. Later that night, her husband inquired about the interaction, but she initially avoided revealing details.
Senate Crisis and Fallout
Akpoti-Uduaghan also spoke on the Senate chambers incident last Thursday, where she objected to her seating arrangement, citing Order 10 of the Senate Rules, which allows senators to speak from their seats or anywhere when raising matters of privilege.
She criticized other female senators for not speaking out in her support, revealing that Senator Ireti Kingibe (FCT) had instead condemned her for filing a defamatory lawsuit against Akpabio.
Additionally, she addressed Akpabio’s nightclub remarks, alleging that he had previously suggested organizing a party in the form of a nightclub for them to “have fun.”
Corruption Allegations and Political Pressure
Akpoti-Uduaghan denied corruption allegations leveled against her by a northern youth group in a petition to the Senate Committee on Ethics, Code of Conduct, and Public Petitions, claiming the accusations were politically motivated.
She alleged that the Senate leadership had pressured her to stop challenging Akpabio, warning her that if he “goes down,” she would be dragged down as well.
