Roma choose Ranieri as interim coach over Allegri, Lampard, Montella
AS Roma are set to reappoint Claudio Ranieri as interim head coach for the remainder of the Serie A season.
The club chiefs favours his experience over other candidates, including Frank Lampard, Massimiliano Allegri and Vincenzo Montella.
Ranieri, a former Roma coach and player, is expected to sign his contract and return to the Italian capital later Wednesday evening.
His first training session is reportedly scheduled for Thursday.
Roma’s owner, Dan Friedkin, met with Ranieri in London, according to Sky Sport Italia, finalizing terms with the 72-year-old tactician.
Ranieri’s appointment marks his third spell as Roma’s coach, following the short spells of Daniele De Rossi and Ivan Juric.
Sources including Sky Sport Italia and Gazzetta dello Sport report that Friedkin’s decision came after Montella failed to reach an agreement, Lampard did not fully convince the board, and Allegri showed no interest in the position.
In addition to leading the squad this season, Ranieri may assume a strategic role on Roma’s board in 2025.
