Rivers LG Polls: Heavily armed men open fire to scare voters at Wike’s community
There is heavy shooting ongoing in the Rumuepirikom Community, which is the residence of the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Chief Nyesom Wike.
Residents are reportedly in a state of panic as gunfire can be heard in various parts of the area. Authorities have not yet released a statement regarding the cause of the shooting or any potential casualties.
However, a source in the area revealed that earlier that some people had come into the community and announced that people should not come out for the LG polls.
It was gathered that as at when the electoral officers were about to arrive the ward in Obio/Akpor Local Government Area, that armed bandits arrived the area.
It was gathered that the unidentified gunmen who arrived the area under heavy gunfire took the area hostage scaring people from coming out to participate in the election.
It was gathered that one person has sustained bullet and has been rushed to a health facility for treatment.
Meanwhile, the Chairmanship Candidate of the Action Peoples Party APP, in Emohua Local Government Area of Rivers State for Local Government Council elections in the state, David Omereji, has said the election was successful without police operatives.
Omereji also stated that no one can rig ongoing poll, adding that the people resolved to ensure peace and sanity.
It would be recalled that police in the state said they would not take part in the election following the judgement order of the Federal High Court holden in Abuja, resided over by Justice Peter Lifu.
Omereji, who spoke after casting his vote at his unit in Ward 11, Egbeda community, Emohua LGA, said the era of election rigging in the state has gone.
He described the process as seamless, free, fair and peaceful, adding that the election was successful without police.
Omereji said: “The election was peaceful and everybody voted without fear or intimidation. This is one peaceful and well coordinated election conducted in the state.
“RSIEC has conducted a seamless election and we commend them for that. The election was peaceful without police. The people were sensitised to ensure Peace.
“Nobody will rig this is election. The result will be as people voted. They have done a good job for the state”
