Rivers governor, Fubara hints at leaving PDP for new political party

The political landscape of Rivers State underwent a shift on Wednesday as Governor Siminalayi Fubara purportedly instructed all 23 local government chairmen in the state to participate in the upcoming local government elections under the banner of the All People’s Party (APP).

GistReel reports that the move to the APP came after Governor  Sim Fubara and his loyalists were sidelined in the struggle for control of the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP after they were denied forms to partake in the congresses that produced the new structure of the party in the state.

The development meant that control of the PDP in Rivers State was vested on Mr Nyesom Wike, the minister of the Federal Capital Territory, FCT

The decision comes in the wake of Governor Fubara losing control of the People’s Democratic Party (PDP) structure in Rivers State to former governor and current Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Nyesom Wike.

The development meant that loyalists of Governor Fubara would not be favoured to be enrolled as candidates of the PDP in the local government election due on October 5, 2024.

GistReel reports  that the apparent nod to the local government chairmen by Fubara to contest on the platform of the APP is a remarkable shift in the politics of Rivers State and could break the 25-year grip of the PDP on the state.
