Rio Ferdinand has dismissed Roy Keane’s claim that Alejandro Garnacho “can’t be trusted” at Manchester United.
The United legend argues that the young winger brings energy and fearlessness to the team.
Garnacho, 20, has worked his way back into the starting lineup under Ruben Amorim and played a key role in United’s FA Cup fourth-round win over Leicester City.
Introduced at half-time, he helped set up Joshua Zirkzee’s equalizer before Harry Maguire’s controversial stoppage-time goal secured victory.
Keane acknowledged Garnacho’s impact but questioned his consistency, suggesting he is still too raw to be a regular starter.
However, Ferdinand strongly disagreed on his Rio Presents podcast, highlighting Garnacho’s confidence and willingness to take responsibility on the pitch.
“You look at him and say his game isn’t 100% clean, but that can be developed. He doesn’t lack effort, he doesn’t lack energy.
“He’s got that belief and character that says, ‘Give me the ball at all times.’” Ferdinand said.
Ferdinand also compared Garnacho to former United winger Nani, pointing out that young attacking players often take time to refine their decision-making but still offer invaluable contributions.
United will aim to build on their FA Cup success when they face Tottenham Hotspur in a crucial Premier League clash on Sunday.
