Paris 2024 Olympics: Argentina’s last-second equalizer against Morocco ruled out in record VAR check

Argentina’s 116th-minute equalizer against Morocco in the Olympics was controversially ruled out for offside more than an hour after the game was suspended.

This marked the longest VAR check in history. The match resumed after nearly 90 minutes, with the African champions securing a 2-1 victory.

The drama unfolded when Cristian Medina’s header, scored 30 seconds over the allotted 15 minutes of added time, was disallowed for offside following a marginal decision.

The match had already been suspended due to a pitch invasion, with firecrackers and bottles thrown from the stands, forcing players to flee.

The chaotic scenes saw riot police intervening to prevent further escalation.

Argentinian players, including Manchester City striker Julian Alvarez, were seen dodging the dangerous objects hurled at them.

After the prolonged suspension, the teams were given 10 minutes to warm up in an empty stadium before playing resumed.

Argentina could not find another equalizer, and Morocco held on for a remarkable win.

The match had begun on a contentious note, with the Argentina national anthem being booed by local French fans.

This reaction was reportedly in response to a video of Argentina players singing a racist chant while celebrating their Copa America title.
