Paralympics: Onyinyechi Mark sets record, wins Nigeria’s first gold medal

Nigerian powerlifter, Onyinyechi Mark breaks the Paralympic record in the women’s 61kg powerlifting division by lifting an impressive 150kg in France.

This incredible achievement outdoes the former record set by her fellow Nigerian, Lucy Ejike.

The 23-year-old’s outstanding performance clinched Nigeria’s first gold medal at the Paris 2024 Paralympic Games after defeating China’s Cui Jianjin, who claimed silver with a lift of 140kg, and Mexico’s Amelia Perez, who took the bronze medal with a lift of 130kg.

Nigeria boasts a rich history in the Paralympics, particularly shining in powerlifting and track events just as it claimed ten medals, four of which were gold during the Tokyo 2020 Paralympics.

The country’s powerlifters, including Lucy Ejike and Bose Omolayo, have frequently set world records and secured numerous gold medals.
