Olympics: Amusan, others shine at historic opening ceremony in Paris

Award-winning athlete, Tobi Amusan and Nigeria’s team captain Anuoluwapo Opeyori led the Nigerian delegation at the colourful and historic Paris 2024 Olympics opening ceremony on Friday night.

Despite the rain, athletes were cheered along the Seine as more than 200 national delegations sailed through the heart of Paris, passing landmarks such as the Notre Dame Cathedral, the Louvre, and the Musée d’Orsay.

The opening ceremony was held outside a stadium for the first time in Summer Games history.

Dressed in stylish green and white outfits, the Nigerian team rode on a boat with Amusan hoisting the flag, supported by Opeyori and the rest of the delegation as they sailed along.

88 Team Nigeria athletes, comprising 63 women and 25 men, will compete in 12 sports at the Paris Olympics.

More than 10,500 athletes will compete in the Olympics, marking 100 years since Paris last hosted the Games.

The Games began on Wednesday, with the first of 329 gold medals to be awarded on Saturday. The closing ceremony is scheduled for August 11.
