The Deputy Governor of Ogun State, Noimot Salako-Oyedele, has dismissed reports circulating on social media claiming she was attacked by protesting students of Moshood Abiola Polytechnic (MAPOLY), Abeokuta.
Speaking during a solidarity visit from the institution’s management, led by Rector Arc. Koye Jolaoso, Salako-Oyedele clarified the events surrounding the protest, which was staged in opposition to a purported new fee regime introduced by the school.
In a statement issued by the institution’s Head of Public Relations and Protocol, Yemi Ajibola, the deputy governor explained that she was en route to Alamala for the Armed Forces Remembrance Day when her security team noticed a gathering of students.
“My security detail advised the driver to take a detour, which we did without any incident. I returned home briefly to allow the crowd to disperse before continuing my journey,” she explained.
Salako-Oyedele further stated, “If I had been attacked, I would not have attended the program at Alamala. But once I was informed that the students had dispersed, I went ahead as planned.
“I urge everyone to be cautious about social media reports, as they have caused unnecessary concern, with many people reaching out to check on me after reading or hearing the news.”
She also encouraged the students to resolve their grievances through peaceful dialogue, emphasizing the value of constructive engagement.
During the visit, Rector Arc. Koye Jolaoso apologized on behalf of the institution’s governing council, management, staff, and students for any inconvenience caused by the protest, describing it as a peaceful demonstration.
“We came to apologize for any embarrassment caused by the protest and to seek your forgiveness as a mother,” Jolaoso said.
The delegation included key members of the institution’s leadership, such as Deputy Rector Dr. Yetunde Lanre-Iyanda, Registrar Mrs. Olubunmi Elewodalu, Polytechnic Librarian Alhaja Basirat Akintunde, Bursar Mrs. Folasade Madariola, FCA, and representatives from campus staff unions.
