NPF threatens jail term for anyone who refuses to assist officers in danger
The Nigeria Police Force, NPF, has threatened jail term for anyone who refuses to help a police officer in danger.
The Force made this known in a statement titled, “KNOW THE LAW AND BE GUIDED” signed by its Public Relations Officer, Olumuyiwa Adejobi on Sunday.
He stated that it is an offence for a person to refuse to assist an officer, who, while discharging his duties, is being assaulted or resisted or in danger of being assaulted or resisted.
He added that such person will be fined the sum of N100k, or risk being sentenced to three months in jail.
Adejobi also noted that any person who in any manner obstructs or resists any public officer while engaged in the discharge or attempted discharge of the duties of his office, is guilty of a misdemeanour and is liable to imprisonment for two years.
The statement reads in part, “When a person is called upon to aid and assist a police officer who is, while in the discharge of his duty, assaulted or resisted or in danger of being assaulted or resisted, and the person refuses or neglects to aid and assist, the person commits an offence and is liable on conviction to a fine of N100,000 or imprisonment for a term of three months or both.”
