Nigeria’s Flamingos defeat USA to reach female U-17 World Cup semi-final for the first time ever
Nigeria’s U-17 women’s national team, The Flamingos, on Friday, October 21, made history by defeating pre-championship favourite, USA, in the quarterfinal of the ongoing 2022 U-17 Women’s World Cup in India.
The game ended 1-1 and dragged on into penalty shootout. The Flamingos got the first goal in the match through a penalty kick, after Amina Bello was fouled in the box by Ella Sanchez.
Omamuzo Edafe stepped up and confidently dispatched the penalty kick in the 26th minute.
USA equalized in the 40th minute from Amalla Villarreal’s close range shot that deflected off Comfort Fólórunsó.
After the game dragged on into a penalty shootout, The Flamingos won 4-3 to reach the semi-final, the first time the Nigeria team would reach the last four in the competition.
Nigeria will now face either Tanzania or Colombia in the semifinals of the 2022 FIFA U-17 Women’s World Cup. The match will be played today.
