Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala makes first appearance at office as WTO Director-General
Nigerian-American economist, Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala resumes office today, March 1st, 2021, as the first woman and first African to become the WTO Director-General.
The 66-year-old international development expert made history on the 15th of February when the General Council agreed by consensus to select Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala of Nigeria as the organization’s seventh Director-General.
In her first appearance to work at the World Trade Organisation, Okonjo rocked a native Ankara outfit as always in her well-styled head tie ‘gele’ and a handbag. She made quite an entrance as she poses for press-photographers.
Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala’s term in office will expire on the 31st of August 2025. The position, however, is renewable for another 4-years.
