NFF to maintain interim coaches for Eagles, Falcons as financial struggles continue

Nigeria’s senior football teams, the Super Eagles and Super Falcons are expected to continue under interim management until the end of 2024.

This is due to ongoing financial constraints within the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF).

Augustine Eguavoen, initially appointed as technical director, will remain as interim head coach of the Super Eagles through the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) qualifiers.

Similarly, Justin Madugu has been tasked with temporarily leading the Super Falcons.

The NFF’s decision to delay appointing permanent coaches is largely due to budget challenges, according to ESPN.

An NFF official explained, “There are no funds to pay a foreign coach, and Eguavoen has performed well, so there’s no urgency for a new appointment.”

Eguavoen’s responsibilities have grown, as he will also oversee Nigeria’s B team at the 2024 African Nations Championship (CHAN).

Despite the added workload, reports indicate that his salary has been reduced due to cost-cutting measures.

Meanwhile, the Super Falcons’ situation is less pressing, as they have no major tournaments until the Africa Women Cup of Nations in 2025.

Madugu, who guided the team through Olympic qualifiers, is expected to manage the team for now.
