NFF dismisses reports of Eric Chelle considering resignation

The Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) has denied reports suggesting Super Eagles head coach Eric Chelle is considering resigning from his position.

Speculation arose after Nigerian journalist Osasu Obayiuwana claimed Chelle was contemplating stepping down due to uncertainty over Nigeria’s 2026 FIFA World Cup qualification campaign.

Obayiuwana stated, “Sources within the NFF say that uncertainty over his fate beyond the FIFA World Cup qualifying series has led to a dramatic change of heart. The NFF will hold a crisis meeting to address the matter.”

Nigeria currently sits fourth in Group C of the qualifiers, with seven points from six matches, trailing leaders South Africa (13 points), Rwanda and Benin Republic (eight points each).

The Super Eagles risk missing out on the tournament, increasing pressure on Chelle to turn things around.

The report further claimed Chelle had traveled to Europe for scouting and planned to meet with the NFF over his future.

However, Ademola Olajire, the NFF’s Head of Communication, dismissed the claims, stating, “This is an April Fool’s prank by Osasu Obayiuwana.”

With the NFF reaffirming its commitment to Chelle, the focus remains on ensuring Nigeria secures qualification for the 2026 World Cup, set to be co-hosted by the USA, Canada and Mexico.
