Newcastle end 70-year trophy drought with Carabao Cup triumph over Liverpool
Newcastle United secured their first major trophy in 70 years with a 2-1 victory over Liverpool in the Carabao Cup final at Wembley Stadium on Sunday.
Goals from Dan Burn and Alexander Isak sealed the historic win for Eddie Howe’s side, as over 32,000 Newcastle fans witnessed the club lift silverware for the first time since 1955.
Liverpool had a penalty appeal ignored in the first half after the ball struck Kieran Trippier’s arm, but Newcastle remained in control.
Just before halftime, Trippier’s corner found Burn unmarked, and the towering defender headed past Caoimhin Kelleher to give Newcastle the lead.
Isak thought he had doubled the advantage after the break, but his effort was ruled out for offside.
Moments later, however, he found the net, converting from close range after Tino Livramento’s cross was knocked down in the box.
Liverpool pressed late on, with Curtis Jones testing Nick Pope and Federico Chiesa pulling a goal back in stoppage time following a VAR review.
But Newcastle held firm to end their long wait for a major trophy, sparking jubilant celebrations among the Geordie faithful.
