Military clarifies bombing In Sokoto communities

Military authorities have responded to reports regarding a military fighter jet allegedly bombing civilians in the Silame Local Government Area of Sokoto State.

According to reports, an airstrike on Wednesday targeting the Lakurawa terrorist group resulted in the bombing of two communities, Gidan Sama and Rumtuwa, leaving many villagers feared dead and others injured.

A resident of Silame, Malam Yahya, explained that the affected villages are located near Surame Forest, known to be a hideout for the Lakurawa group and other bandits.

However, in an official statement, Abubakar Abdullahi, the joint media coordinator for the operation, clarified that the airstrikes were directed at locations confirmed to be linked to the terrorist group.

He emphasized that all military operations are carried out following thorough intelligence and reconnaissance to ensure precision and minimize harm to civilians.

The statement reads, “These reports have raised concerns; however, it is crucial to clarify that all military operations are conducted based on thorough intelligence and reconnaissance missions.

“This rigorous process is particularly important when targeting groups like the Lakurawa terrorist organisation, as it aims to ensure precision and protect civilian lives.

“There is a significant risk that terrorist groups may attempt to undermine military successes through media disinformation, necessitating caution concerning unverified claims, especially in the ongoing fight against terrorism and banditry.

“Importantly, the targets struck in the vicinity of Gidan Sama and Rumtuwa have been positively identified as associated with the Lakurawa group, reinforcing the justification for the military action taken.”

Similarly, the Spokesperson for the Nigerian Air Force, Olusola Akinboyewa, confirmed to TheCable that the airstrikes were conducted based on credible intelligence from multiple sources and confirmatory aerial surveillance.

He said, “Nevertheless, reports of possible harm to civilians will be thoroughly investigated, and we will update you appropriately.”
