Middlesbrough’s new addition Kelechi Iheanacho names football legends who shaped his career

Middlesbrough’s new signing, Kelechi Iheanacho, has credited several football greats, including Jamie Vardy, Yaya Touré, and John Mikel Obi, for influencing his career.

Speaking to Middlesbrough’s media team, the Nigerian forward acknowledged the impact of managers and teammates who guided him at Manchester City, Leicester City, and the national team.

“There are quite a few—so many people have helped me throughout my career, including managers like Manuel Pellegrini, Brendan Rodgers, and Pep Guardiola,” Iheanacho said.

“Players as well—Clichy, Kompany, Yaya Touré, and obviously, Jamie Vardy. Even in the Nigerian national team, John Mikel Obi was a big influence.”

Iheanacho began his career at Manchester City, where he played alongside veterans like Vincent Kompany and Yaya Touré before moving to Leicester in 2017.

At the King Power Stadium, he formed a strong bond with Jamie Vardy and played a key role in Leicester’s 2021 FA Cup triumph under Brendan Rodgers.

On the international stage, he praised Mikel Obi’s leadership, highlighting the former Chelsea midfielder’s role in mentoring young Super Eagles players.

Now on loan at Middlesbrough from Sevilla, the 28-year-old is eager to reignite his career and make an impact in the EFL Championship.
