Messi scores first goal of 2025 as Inter Miami win preseason clash
Lionel Messi marked his first goal of 2025, leading Inter Miami to victory against Club América on penalties.
The preseason game, which took place at Allegiant Stadium, ended in a 2-2 draw after regular time.
The Argentine maestro, Messi, scored in the 34th minute with a deft header, canceling out an earlier lead by Club América.
The goal extended his remarkable scoring streak to 21 consecutive years, to the delight of new coach Javier Mascherano, who was having his debut match.
Despite the intense back-and-forth at 2-2, both teams couldn’t find a winner within 90 minutes, leading to a penalty shootout.
Inter Miami clinched the win with a 3-2 scoreline, thanks to a cool-headed performance from the penalty spot, with the decisive kick coming from 17-year-old Santiago Morales, who made an impressive debut.
The match was part of Inter Miami’s preparation for the upcoming MLS season, with the team set to continue their preseason tour in Peru, Panama, and Honduras before facing Orlando City in a friendly match in Tampa.
Their regular season kicks off against New York City FC on February 22, 2025.
