Mathys Tel joins Tottenham on loan after rejecting Man United move

Mathys Tel has completed a loan move to Tottenham Hotspur from Bayern Munich, just days after initially turning down a switch to North London.

Spurs had agreed on a permanent deal for the 19-year-old forward, but he rejected the transfer on Friday.

However, after a Zoom call with manager Ange Postecoglou over the weekend, Tel changed his mind and opted for a loan move until the end of the season, with an option for a permanent transfer.

Tottenham will cover the entirety of the Frenchman’s wages, securing the deal swiftly amid interest from Arsenal, Manchester United, and Chelsea.

United had two loan bids rejected after refusing to meet Bayern’s £6.6 million loan fee, while Tel was uncertain about game time at Chelsea.

Limited to just eight Bundesliga appearances this season under Vincent Kompany, Tel has struggled for minutes and is yet to score in 14 appearances across all competitions.

His arrival comes as a boost for Spurs, who are dealing with injuries to Timo Werner, Brennan Johnson, and Dominic Solanke.

Tel could make his debut in Thursday’s Carabao Cup semi-final second leg against Liverpool, where Spurs hold a 1-0 advantage.
