Matheus Nunes set to depart Manchester City for former teammate’s club
After Julian Alvarez’s recent transfer to Atletico Madrid in a deal reportedly worth up to €95 million, Manchester City’s Matheus Nunes could be next in line.
Nunes who joined City from Wolverhampton Wanderers for €62 million last year, has struggled for regular game time under Pep Guardiola, making only 16 starts.
With Ilkay Gundogan back at City, Nunes is expected to seek a new challenge before the transfer window closes this week.
According to The Athletic, Atletico Madrid is exploring a possible loan deal for the Portuguese midfielder.
However, a move to Atletico could present its own challenges for Nunes.
The midfield competition at the Metropolitano is fierce, with recent signing Conor Gallagher joining a roster that already includes Rodrigo de Paul, Koke, Pablo Barrios, and Marcos Llorente.
Additionally, forward positions are well-stocked with players like Antoine Griezmann, Angel Correa, Rodrigo Riquelme, and Julian Alvarez.
Despite these, Atletico could still pursue Nunes, especially if Arthur Vermeeren exits the club as anticipated.
