Liverpool’s Konaté in running for France captaincy ahead of UEFA Nations League games
Liverpool defender Ibrahima Konaté is one of three candidates being considered to captain France in their upcoming UEFA Nations League matches.
With regular captain Kylian Mbappé absent, alongside N’Golo Kanté and the retirement of Antoine Griezmann from international football, France’s leadership role remains up for grabs.
Konaté, who has become a key figure for Liverpool, is highly regarded by France manager Didier Deschamps.
Despite not featuring in France’s Euro 2024 campaign, his charisma and strong presence in the team make him a serious contender for the armband, according to RMC Sport.
Real Madrid’s Aurélien Tchouaméni and Barcelona’s Jules Koundé are also in contention for the captaincy.
Both players are well-respected within the squad, but Konaté’s growing influence may give him an edge.
France will face Israel in Budapest on Thursday before taking on Belgium in Brussels next Monday, with the captaincy decision expected to be revealed soon.
