“Learn to communicate without speaking Yoruba” — Destiny Etiko urges (Video)

Prominent Nollywood actress, Destiny Etiko pleads to her colleagues in the Yoruba film industry and their fans urging them to embrace the Nigerian lingua franca.

In a video circulating social media, the actress, who is of Igbo descent, expressed observation amongst many of her colleagues who solely rely on their native dialect for communication, resulting in significant communication barriers.

Destiny Etiko cited the same issue when following up on comments and threads of Yoruba speakers who would rather communicate in their dialect than carry everyone along.

In her appeal, she encouraged them to learn how to effectively communicate in either English or a simplified version of the language called broken English.

“I just don’t know why whenever you are speaking to Yoruba people, they will always want to speak Yoruba. Ehhhhh I don’t understand even on blogs. You all will be speaking Yoruba like everyone is Yoruba. You guys should try and speak English or broken,” she said.

Reactions trailing Destiny Etiko and issues with Yoruba speakers

iam_donchasy1 noted: “To be honest, she’s actually making a point. Personally I understand few languages in Nigeria, so it’s not a problem for me but let’s be realistic, not everyone understands a certain language you’re speaking to address the general public, let’s try to use English so everyone could understand the message you’re trying to pass. 🙏🏼”

hardeyhemy15 stated: “You are always complaining, is it a must you understand what they are saying, at least mind your business and speak your language in Peace.. Everytime they always have something to say, as if they are perfect.. mtcheww”

tnabeautystore penned: “I understand her though. My personal experience. In a work place, everyone is comfortably speaking Yoruba like it’s a language everyone understands. Luckily for me, I do.

“The moment I see an Igbo brother or sister and start to speak igbo, you will start hearing “English! English!, no sell us oh, speak Wetin we go hear, ah! Ah! Ah! You don come with this your Igbo, omo igbo rora na, so nko ti ale gbo” but you were just speaking Yoruba and we didn’t care. The response is usually, but you understand yoruba” ok, how about the next person? Maybe you should learn how to speak igbo too.

Make we just agree to dey speak Wetin everybody go hear.”
