Labour Party confirms Peter Obi’s 2027 candidacy, says Tinubu won’t have it easy
The Labour Party (LP) has reaffirmed its commitment to fielding former Anambra State Governor, Peter Obi, as its presidential candidate in the 2027 general elections.
Speaking on Politics Today, a Channels Television programme, the party’s National Publicity Secretary, Abayomi Arabambi, made it clear that the LP remains determined to challenge President Bola Tinubu in the next election cycle.
“Tinubu is not just going to have it very easy in 2027, we are coming back with that Peter Obi to them so that they will know we are very serious,” he said.
Arabambi also dismissed the significance of actor-turned-politician Kenneth Okonkwo’s resignation from the party, describing it as a positive development.
He questioned Okonkwo’s commitment to the LP, alleging that he had been working in favour of the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) and President Tinubu.
“And we wish Kenneth Okonkwo well, his resignation is good riddance to bad rubbish. He should not speak about the Labour Party anymore,” Arabambi stated.
He further debunked claims of internal crises within the party, insisting that LP remains strong and is not on the brink of collapse.
“There is no leadership crisis in the Labour Party. Labour Party is not going into extinction. It is just a figment of the imaginations of most of our detractors,” he added.
Peter Obi was the LP’s presidential candidate in the 2023 election, where he finished third behind Atiku Abubakar of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) and President Bola Tinubu of the APC.
Despite the loss, the party remains confident that Obi will stage a stronger challenge in 2027.
