Just In: New Alaafin of Oyo to be crowned April 4

The ancient town of Oyo in Oyo State is set to make history as Oba Abimbola Akeem Owoade will be officially crowned the 46th Alaafin of Oyo on Friday, April 4, 2025.

According to reports, the highly anticipated event will solidify Oba Owoade’s role as the custodian of Yoruba cultural heritage.

Sources revealed to The Sun that extensive preparations are underway, with committees comprising representatives from the Alaafin’s palace and the Oyo State Government working to ensure a grand and seamless ceremony.

Before his coronation, Oba Owoade will undergo a series of traditional seclusion rites, known as Alaafin Rituals, deeply rooted in Yoruba culture and spirituality. These rites are designed to prepare the monarch physically and spiritually for his sacred role.

Governor Seyi Makinde of Oyo State had approved Oba Owoade’s nomination on Friday, January 10, 2025. In a symbolic act, the governor presented him with the staff and instruments of office on Monday, January 13, 2025, officially marking the beginning of his reign.
