Japa: UK increases visa fees for students, travelers

The United Kingdom (UK) has announced an increase in visa application fees for students, tourists, and other travelers, a decision that is expected to impact Nigerians and other international applicants.

According to the UK Home Office, the cost of a student visa has been raised from £363 to £490, marking a 35% increase. Other visa categories, including work and family visas, have also been adjusted as part of the review.

In a statement, the UK government defended the move, stating that the additional fees would help sustain the country’s immigration system and fund public sector wages.

It is right and fair to increase visa application fees to ensure that the costs of running the immigration system are met by those who benefit from it,” the Home Office stated.

However, the decision has raised concerns among students and travel consultants, particularly in Nigeria, where the UK remains a top destination for education and tourism.

Adeola Ogunsanya, a Nigerian travel consultant, described the increase as a significant challenge for aspiring students.

Many Nigerian students already struggle with tuition and living expenses in the UK. Adding an extra financial burden through higher visa fees will make it even harder for them,” she said.

Similarly, Tunde Ajayi, a prospective master’s student, expressed disappointment over the new rates.

“I have been saving up for my studies in the UK, but with this extra cost, I might have to reconsider my plans,” he said.

With thousands of Nigerians applying for UK visas every year, experts predict that the hike could lead to a decline in applications, especially among students facing financial constraints.

Despite the concerns, the UK government insists that the adjustments are necessary to maintain an efficient immigration system.

The changes will help maintain a sustainable and efficient immigration system,” the Home Office reiterated.
