“It’s not a Chelsea problem” – Enzo Maresca defends Blues on academy players sale
Chelsea head coach Enzo Maresca has defended the club’s decision to sell academy players like Conor Gallagher.
The new manager attributed the trend to Premier League regulations rather than the club’s strategy.
“It’s not Chelsea’s problem. it’s the rules problem,” Maresca stated. “The clubs are compelled to sell players because of the rules.
“It’s not a Chelsea problem, it’s a Premier League problem,” he added.
Recall Gallagher, a Chelsea academy graduate, has verbally agreed to join Atlético Madrid after being informed of a reduced role under Maresca.
The midfielder, who played 50 games last season, more than any other Chelsea player, has reportedly agreed to a five-year deal with the La Liga side valued at €40 million.
Transfer expert Fabrizio Romano noted, “Understand Conor Gallagher’s prepared to travel to Madrid on Tuesday to complete his move to Atlético.”
This move follows Chelsea’s decision to exclude another academy graduate, Trevor Chalobah, from their pre-season tour in US.
The club is open to offers for Chalobah, citing abundance of players capable of his role as a defender.
