Griezmann retires from international football
France’s star midfielder Antoine Griezmann has officially retired from international football at the age of 33.
In an unaticipated announcement on Monday, Griezmann ended a decorated international career that saw him earn 137 caps, scoring 44 goals for France.
Placing him fourth on France’s all-time scoring list, behind Olivier Giroud, Thierry Henry, and Kylian Mbappé.
Griezmann was a key figure in France’s 2018 World Cup title, famously scoring from the penalty spot in the final against Croatia.
He also helped lead the team to victory in the 2020/2021 UEFA Nations League.
Since his breakout performance in the 2014 World Cup, the Atlético Madrid midfielder has been a mainstay in Didier Deschamps’ squad.
In a heartfelt message shared on social media, Griezmann said, “It is with a heart full of memories that I close this chapter of my life.
“Thank you for this magnificent tricolor adventure and see you soon.”
