Georgia pull major upset against Portugal to seal historic Euro 2024 last-16 spot

Georgia advanced to the last 16 of Euro 2024 with a stunning 2-0 win over Cristiano Ronaldo’s Portugal on Wednesday.

The win marks Georgia’s first ever in a major tournament and the biggest upset in European Championship history by FIFA rankings.

Khvicha Kvaratskhelia broke the deadlock early, capitalizing on a careless pass by Portugal’s António Silva.

Georges Mikautadze added a second with a penalty, sealing the win for Georgia, who are ranked 74th by FIFA, against the sixth-ranked Portuguese.

The result stands as Georgia’s greatest since gaining independence from the Soviet Union in 1991.
