Gareth Southgate reacts to Harry Maguire and Nick Pope’s mistakes against Germany
England head coach Gareth Southgate has refused to blame his players – Harry Maguire and Nick Pope after they made costly mistakes in their game on Monday night.
The Three Lions ended their Nations League campaign with a 3-3 draw against Germany. However, the results could have given them three points if not for the mistakes from their defender Harry Maguire and goalkeeper Nick Pope.
Man United captain Maguire was booed by his supporters and he lost possession of the ball to Jamal Musiala. Maguire then fouled the player inside the penalty box which led to Germany’s first goal.
The scoreline moved to 2-0 before England completed the comeback to make it 3-2. However, Nick Pope’s mistake gave Kai Havertz his second goal of the night.
Speaking after the game, Gareth Southgate said: “It is hard to tell from the side. It is the giving away of possession that is the problem but look, as a group, they have really come together this week. It has been a tough period for the team but they have grown.
On Pope, he added: “It is an error and of course, he’s going to be down but the team has to be together and we have done that all week.
