FIFA launch $50M legacy fund to aid social programs post-Qatar 2022
FIFA have unveiled a $50 million legacy fund, marking a new chapter in social impact initiatives following the 2022 World Cup in Qatar.
Partnering with the World Health Organization (WHO), UNHCR (the UN Refugee Agency), and the World Trade Organization (WTO), the fund will support a variety of global social programs aimed at addressing critical issues.
FIFA President Gianni Infantino emphasized the fund’s broader focus, saying, “FIFA is taking the concept of a legacy fund to the next level… by tackling key priorities such as refugees, occupational health, education and football development.”
Key highlights of the legacy fund:
Support for Vulnerable Populations:
FIFA will collaborate with UNHCR to enhance access to basic services for refugees, assisting displaced individuals to rebuild their lives with dignity.
“Beat the Heat” Initiative:
In partnership with WHO, the fund will promote health and safety measures for individuals at risk of extreme heat, a concern that arose during Qatar’s hosting of the World Cup.
Empowering Women Entrepreneurs:
Through the Women Exporters in the Digital Economy (WEIDE) Fund, co-launched by the WTO and the International Trade Centre (ITC), $16.6 million has been allocated to support women-led enterprises in digital trade.
Football Development:
Aspire Academy in Qatar will team up with FIFA’s Talent Development Scheme, spearheaded by Arsène Wenger, to scout and nurture football talent in remote and underdeveloped areas.
The $50 million donation corresponds to 1% of the revenue generated from the Qatar World Cup and aims to extend the event’s legacy beyond football.
