FG set to integrate AI into Nigerian schools – Alausa

The Federal Government has announced ongoing efforts to incorporate Artificial Intelligence (AI) into Nigeria’s teaching and learning systems.

The Minister of Education, Tunji Alausa, emphasized the importance of leveraging AI to enhance the country’s educational outcomes.

Speaking during a ministerial briefing on Friday to commemorate the International Day of Education, Alausa highlighted the significance of this year’s theme: “AI and Education: Preserving Human Agency in a World of Automation.”

Represented by the Ministry’s Director of Polytechnics, Dr. Ejeh Usman, Alausa acknowledged concerns about the challenges of integrating AI but stressed its transformative potential.

As we navigate the rapidly evolving landscape of Artificial Intelligence, it is essential to prioritize human agency in education,” he said. “We must ensure AI complements, rather than replaces, the critical role of educators in shaping young minds. Our goal is to harness AI’s potential to enhance teaching and learning while preserving the unique qualities that make us human. This vision will empower students to thrive in an increasingly automated world.”

The Minister noted that the government has already introduced AI-driven tools for teachers and students, including:

  • Inspire: A platform bringing classrooms closer for students.
  • Ignite: A tool assisting teachers in creating lesson plans.
  • Tertiary Information System (TIS): A portal digitizing undergraduate records for easier data access and management.
  • Nigeria Learning Passport: A digital platform offering free access to over 15,000 learning resources for primary, junior, and secondary school students nationwide.

He also highlighted ongoing efforts to automate the evaluation and accreditation of academic records to simplify administrative processes.

Alausa reaffirmed the Ministry’s commitment to working with international partners, education professionals, and experts to align AI integration with global best practices.

He further announced plans to establish an AI in Education Task Force to develop guidelines and standards for teacher training, ensuring educators are adequately equipped to adapt to this technological advancement.
