Ex-Manchester United midfielder Anderson faces prison sentence over child maintenance debt

Former Manchester United star Anderson is facing a prison sentence in Brazil after failing to pay £45,000 in child maintenance.

talkSPORT reports that the 36-year-old, who won four Premier League titles during his eight-year stint at Old Trafford, was informed by a family court judge in Porto Alegre last Thursday of the consequences if he fails to settle the debt.

Brazilian news outlet GZH reports that Anderson could be imprisoned for 30 days if he doesn’t pay up.

If he ends up serving a prison sentence, there’s the possibility of a “semi-open” regime, allowing him to work or study during the day and return to prison at night.

Meanwhile, this isn’t Anderson’s first legal issue. In 2021, a year after retiring, he was investigated for allegedly laundering £4.7 million through cryptocurrencies.

Although he denied the allegations, it’s unclear whether the investigation remains active or if he managed to clear his name.
