Everton 2-2 Man United: Referee overturn last-minute penalty to spare Amorim another defeat

Ruben Amorim’s Manchester United narrowly avoided yet another Premier League defeat as a last-minute Everton penalty was controversially overturned following a VAR review.

David Moyes’ Everton stormed to a two-goal lead at Goodison Park, with Beto firing in the opener after a lengthy VAR check.

Abdoulaye Doucoure doubled the advantage, heading home a rebound from Jack Harrison’s effort.

The Toffees looked in control, with Doucoure forcing a strong save from Andre Onana early in the second half.

However, United roared back into the contest through Bruno Fernandes, whose clever free-kick caught Jordan Pickford off guard.

The Red Devils then equalized when Manuel Ugarte struck a brilliant effort from the edge of the box after another Fernandes set-piece.

Drama unfolded deep into stoppage time when referee Andy Madley awarded Everton a penalty after Ashley Young went down in the box.

But after consulting the VAR monitor, Madley reversed his decision, ruling that Young had gone to ground too easily, sparing Amorim’s side from another painful defeat.

The draw leaves United still struggling for consistency under Amorim, while Moyes’ Everton will feel an opportunity was denied them in the thrilling contest.
