Europa Semi-Final: Juventus shock Sevilla with late goal
Juventus were able to grab a 1-1 draw against Sevilla in their Europa League semi-final first leg on Thursday, May 11, following a 97th-minute header from Federico Gatti.
Youssef En-Nesyri gave the record six-time champions the lead in the first half and they seemed set to take that advantage back to Seville before Gatti’s late intervention.
The Moroccan international finished a sharp counter-attack in the 26th minute to break the deadlock in Turin.
The visitors could have added another, but Wojciech Szczesny made a couple of neat saves to keep them out.
Toothless Juventus recorded their first shot on target in the 65th minute when substitute Samuel Iling Junior tried his luck from distance with a tame strike that Sevilla goalkeeper Yassine Bounou easily saved.
Juventus were energized by substitute Federico Chiesa, who is still working his way back from a long injury layoff.
They were rewarded for their efforts, with substitute Gatti nodding home a 97th-minute equalizer to lock the tie at 1-1 heading into the second leg.
The two sides will meet next week in the second leg, which seems positioned to be an enticing encounter.
