Euro 2024: Netherlands open campaign with 2-1 win over Poland

The Netherlands began their Euro 2024 campaign with a 2-1 comeback victory over Poland at the Volksparkstadion.

Despite an early scare, Ronald Koeman’s side secured all three points.

Poland struck first with Adam Buksa, who replaced Robert Lewandowski, heading in a corner to give his team the lead.

However, the Dutch soon equalized through Cody Gakpo.

The Liverpool forward, who was a standout player, saw his shot deflect twice before wrong-footing Poland’s goalkeeper, Wojciech Szczesny, and finding the net.

Late in the game, substitute Wout Weghorst made an immediate impact, scoring just two minutes after coming on.

Nathan Ake’s cross from the left took a slight deflection, landing perfectly for Weghorst to sweep home a smart finish, completing the Netherlands’ comeback.

Koeman’s team, while it seems they need to tighten their defense, showed their offensive strength.

They will be looking to build on their Sunday performance in their subsequent outings as the tournament progresses.

Meanwhile, next on the dugout in Group D will be Austria versus France, and the clash is slated for Monday evening in Düsseldorf.
