EPL: Mauricio Pochettino hints on Gallagher’s becoming one of Chelsea’s captains
Mauricio Pochettino has told Conor Gallagher he should not be surprised to be considered as one of Chelsea’s captains.
Gallagher recently captained Chelsea in their 0-0 draw against Bournemouth at the Vitality Stadium, a decision the player did not expect.
With Reece James currently on the sideline due to injury and vice-captain Ben Chilwell on the bench during the match, Gallagher was handed the captain’s armband.
Pochettino highlighted that Gallagher’s deep-rooted connection with Chelsea played a vital role in the decision.
During a press conference on Friday, Pochettino stated, “He was captain against Wimbledon also. He is supposed to be captain. It’s nice.
“It is normal if you see the starting XI versus Bournemouth, he was also captain versus Wimbledon, it’s not a big thing to create a party. He can be a captain; he is from Chelsea, and it is perfect for him to represent the team,” he said.
Chelsea are set to face Aston Villa on Sunday, hoping to break through their goal-scoring woes.
The team have also named nine of their players who will miss the clash at Stamford Bridge on Sunday.
They are Benoit Badiashile, Armando Broja, Marcus Bettinelli, Trevoh Chalobah, Carney Chukwuemeka, Wesley Fofana, Reece James, Christopher Nkunku, Romeo Lavia.
