EPL: Guardiola blocked from leaving if Man City relegates in new deal
Pep Guardiola has agreed on a contract extension with Manchester City, which runs until the summer of 2026.
The deal does not include a break clause should the club face relegation from the Premier League.
This scenario could arise if City are found guilty of over 100 financial misconduct charges currently being investigated by an independent commission.
The Premier League champions have strongly denied the allegations, but if found guilty, potential sanctions could include demotion to a lower division.
Despite this looming uncertainty, Guardiola’s commitment to the club remains steadfast.
The 53-year-old manager, who has led City to six Premier League titles and a historic Champions League victory, previously expressed his willingness to stay even if the club were relegated.
A year ago, when asked about such a possibility, he responded: “Absolutely, I will not consider my future [based on] being here [Premier League] or in League One.
“There’s more chance to stay if we are in League One than in the Champions League.”
Since taking charge in 2016, he has overseen one of the most successful eras in the club’s history, winning multiple domestic and international trophies.
